"Because you're young, you'll meet a stranger some night"
-Because You're Young, David Bowie

Today is Sarah Polley Day.

We’re screening her new film Away from Her in my film marketing class. And Sarah is coming to the class. Yay! I’ve brought my copy of Dawn of the Dead with me to see if there is an appropriate moment when I can strategically ask for her signature to add to my collection of 300+ autographs. Dawn of the Dead sums up her career so well. I’m happy just to have her come to my class tonight.

"They seem so unhappy - dead or alive"

The play, Equus opened in London last night to good reviews…especially the final 10 minutes of the play in which Harry Potter, um, I mean, Daniel Radcliffe is totally naked, full frontal style. Although I’m not sure if my mom fully understands what she’s in for on play night. Who needs to spend money on concert tickets when I can spend well-earned cash on inappropriately naked young boys? I’m joking. You all now I like older men and took pride in being the only 15 year old girl with pictures of Bono taped to her binder in a midst of Backstreet Boy lovers.

"Because you're young - what could be nicer for you and it I'll make me sad"

To further my promise to myself to not buy concert tickets for a while, I have decided that I should not go shopping for the next month to save up for the wallet-gouging spree that will be my birthday in London. I’m going to try not to buy any clothes- except for this slightly ridiculous, Michael Jackson-eque 80’s inspired bright orange cotton jacket I want at H&M. It’s all this purchasing concert tickets up front for you people that is setting me back, but I will clean up in May with y’all owing me for Arcade Fire, Scissor Sisters, etc. I win.

I May Be Busy, But Not too Busy for a Blog & a List Playlist (aka "I had a dream about Kiefer Sutherland Last Night" mix):

Naive- Kooks
House of Jealous Lovers- The Rapture
She's Losin It- Belle & Sebastian
School Spirit- Kanye "My Brother" West
Strict Machine- Goldfrapp

"I saw you one time at the back of the club chewing on glass and a ticket stub”
-Flathead, The Fratellis

The moment you’ve all been waiting for:

Live Forever- Oasis
Africa- Toto
Lovestoned- Shane’s boyfriend
Gimme Shelter- Rolling Stones
LDN- Lily Allen
Roscoe- Midlake
Magic Bus- the Who
Ice Age- Hawksley Workman
Ruby- Kaiser Chiefs
All My Friends- LCD Soundsystem

Oasis & Africa actually tied for first.
Midlake & Lily Allen are tied for last place.
And we say goodbye to the bottom 4 songs.

“They dont come much more sick than you”

I’m officially cutting myself off from concerts in the near future. As much as I love to prove my Ticketmastering skillz and however much MasterCard apprieciates my business, even I am starting to think that 4 concerts in 10 days, and 7 shows lined up for the next 2 and a half months is a bit excessive. Although I think we all know that my promises will be broken, just like the white man’s pact with the natives. This promise is only in place until someone like The Fratellis come to town or Tokyo Police Club plays a show I can go to. Or, in all far-fetched fantasies, U2 announce a surprise tour, Blur reunites, and Franz Ferdinand play somewhere other than the Ricoh Coliseum.

And as long as no one else lines up a show between May 7-16, I’m golden, and already am on tap for The Killers, Tapes n’ Tapes, Arcade Fire, and The Kooks which will be the most-consecutive non-U2 concerts I have ever seen. And I still have an extra Kaiser Chiefs/The Walkmen ticket up for grabs for April 18th…takers?

“Well hers is a tonic and mine is a gin”

And Sunrise has a random 2 for $20 DVD sale going on which provided me the oppourtunity to purchase the totally awesome combo of Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone (none of that American “Sorcerer’s Stone” titlage for me) and another copy of Dawn of the Dead (2004)

which will hopefully play chapter 15, unlike the copy I bought off of eBay for 1 cent. A rad double feature indeed.

(I should have prefaced that last sentence by saying that I’m brining “rad” back into modern vocabulary. Since sexy had already been brought back- arguably sexy never left according the little man in purple velvet, Prince- we needed something for Aught 7.)

Radical. Just in time for the wholly unnecessary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film out this summer.

And on a side note in this already stream of consciousness post, I'd liek to imagine that Peter Sarsgaard is drunk in this picture:

“I could go on if you want me to”

"This is the wildest party that there ever could be "
-Mama Told Me Not to Come, Randy Newman

The Oscar party went off without a hitch, even though most of us ended up with stomach aches following the non-stop gorging on food from the pre-show at 530 through to 1230 when we called it a night.

I won the pool and took 1st prize, with Scott in 2nd and Cassandra in 3rd place.

This being our Superbowl, applause and cheers broke out for Marty and The Departed’s win for Best Picture, several WTFs for The Danish Poet’s win, and lots of debate over Sound Mixing. And in a scene that is likely to come true, Dan and I fought over the Oscar statue:
The evening’s excitement started early with the mixing and spiking of punch, and at 6pm I was already yelling, “SARSGAARD!” (because I inexplicably love him in all his not too meaty, not to firmness) to haul Eve from the kitchen from making her Arabic meat-on-bread (aka The Omar Sharif) which went lovely with our Bubba Gump Shrimp, Zesty Salma Hayek Jalepeno dip, and the Dame Judi Dench Bridge Mix. We also passed the time posing with an Oscar statue in “you’ve just won an Oscar!” poses.
"Our hostess is not lasting - she's out on the floor "

Observations of the evening:

Where the Hell is Mickey Rooney? One can only assume he is dead.

The show was so long Peter O’Toole died during the ceremony. Either from boredom or a broken heart. Cue several references to Peter O’Toole’s corpse winning Best Actor.

Lots of Eddie Murphy and Beyonce hatin’ around the room, although for once, Beyonce wasn’t dressed like a mermaid.

Children at the Oscars: big mistake. Son of Will Smith, you will never win an Oscar.

Why is Jack Nicholson bald in a Lex Lutheran way?

Scott and I battled over our collective girlfriend Kate Winslet and decided that she was enough woman for both of us to love.

Who let Tom Cruise out of his crazy cage?

Clint Eastwood took a stab at Italian translation for Ennio Morricone. It also prompted random translations for the gang on my couch. It was also assumed that Clint Eastwood had a stroke on stage which gave him the ability to become fluent in Italian. He’ll be dead soon.

Instead of being montage-heavy circle the Aught 5 show, they paired it down to 3 or 4 very long montages…montage works better when it’s short and sweet- just ask Sergei Eisenstein.

The Departed made up for Crash’s “win” last year.

Thank God Jennifer Hudson took off her Judy Jetson space shuttle gold jacket.

The “In Memoriam” reel offered a few “He died???” from the crowd, although I’ve already forgotten who we were shocked to find out had died, which only means that I’ve embarked on a cycle of amazement every time I remember someone died, then promptly forget, only to be reminded again later with another “He’s dead??”

“They’ve brought back interpretative dance?!” … which would have been better than the weird shadow puppets.

Ellen: stick with your day job.

"Will you have whiskey with your water, Or sugar with your tea? "

And finally, the big winner of the night:

Mr. Merv Griffin

"Mama told me not to come Mama said, "That ain't no way to have fun" "

"You better - lose yourself in the music, the moment, You own it, you better never let it go"
-Lose Yourself, Eminem (yes, I am still bitter over this song if you were wondering)

In the words of P.Diddy: "Vote or Die"....Pick 6-
Lovestoned- Justin Timberlake
Magic Bus- The Who
Live Forever- Oasis
Gimme Shelter- Rolling Stones
Ice Age- Hawksley Workman
Africa- Toto
Roscoe- Midlake
LDN- Lily Allen
Ruby- Kaiser Chiefs
All My Friends- LCD Soundsystem

Has it really come down to this? Only 4 of us pitching songs? If there was going to be a final four, there was no doubt that it would be down to Lauren, the Brothers McNeil, and myself. I guess we fall into the more musically obsessive category.

As you should know, its Academy Awards weekend which has me cramming Iwo Jima in tomorrow as I begin to prep our award's themed snacks like Zesty Salma Hayek Jalepeno Cheddar Dip. Perhaps next year I won't be so unco-ordinated as to plan and Oscar gathering at the same time as Lauren. Then again, if you'll recall my Oscar party of Aught 5, I'm quite picky when it comes to Oscar viewings. The only person I fully trust to watch the Oscars with is Shane...I apologise for nothing. Let's jsut hope Sunday doesn't end with me slamming the door to my room to watch my beloved In Memorium reel on my own. Now on with the obligatory Mickey "i'm not dead yet" Rooney shot and hope they don't do the "Oscar winner yearbook" again where they haul the nearly deceased and recent winners out on stage for an awkward and time-consuming photo op. Either way, cheers to the death of the interpretive dance numbers and a hearty "Go Marty & Marky Mark" to you all, and to all a good night.

Now it cuts like a knife, But it feels so right
-Cuts Like A Knife, Bryan Adams

I was standing on Roncesvalles staring at a church and pondering why it was so busy at 845am. Then it hit me. It’s Ash Wednesday. The Good Catholic I am and all. I did remember this item last night when I discovered it was Pancake Tuesday, but I used that as more of an excuse just to eat pancakes for dinner. I do love pancakes.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I was in a church for religious purposes, as opposed to sightseeing in foreign locales. I believe the year was 2001 when we had a “spiritual retreat” at a church in high school, which was really just an excuse to show up out of our Catholic School uniforms and eat at McDonalds. Come to think of it, I think I ditched church early and went to the mall.

“This wouldn't be the first time, Things have gone astray”

That being said, it is Lent. There were the years I gave up chocolate and popcorn…even though I don’t eat either. Someone once suggested I should give up being me and pretend that I’m nice. Old men tell me that I look like a “nice girl” when they sit next to me on the streetcar. Clearly, they don’t know any better. I could give up movies, but we all know I would only last a day. Technically I’ve given up the Dance Cave for over 40 days pre-Lent. That has to count for something. I also find it impossible to stop randomly obsessing over things. I think I’ll give up slacking off for most of the workday and actually commit to working. I don’t have to work hard, I’ll just make more of an effort to appear busy. Like right now it looks like I am working on an important document instead of this blog. Making lists looks like I’m working. That’ll do.

Maybe it’s time to give up being such a jerk and stop mocking Catholicism. I can't picture myself not being a jerk.

“Can't you see we did the best we could”

Today’s Ash-Wednesday filled Playlist includes (but also fundamentally excludes songs by Ash):

Standing in the Way of Control- Gossip
Cheshire Cat Smile- Milburn
I Fought the Law- The Clash
Message in a Bottle- The Police
Funkytown- Lipps Inc.

“I hitched a ride with my soul, By the side of the road, Just as the sky turned black”
-hey Now, Oasis

Ok, since we are at a dead heat in terms of a three-way tie, I’m just going to randomly going to pick my favourite. Yeah, I know, this dictatorship sucks. For you.

I present, the Top 10 o’ the Week, with the bottom 4 leaving the list for this week’s voting.

Ice Age- Hawksley Workman
Africa- Toto
Roscoe- Midlake
Ruby- Kaiser Chiefs
All My Friends- LCD Soundsystem
LDN- Lily Allen

Snow Song- Habitat
The Well and the Lighthouse- Arcade Fire
No Tomorrow- Orson
Hospital Beds- Cold War Kids

Arcade, Lily, and Habitat were tied. I guess in the future, if there are ties, the song that's been on the longest will be removed. Start pitching…now.

PS> Apologies to Ryan: I only show up on your blog on odd days…when do you have your song poll up?

“I thought that I heard someone say now, There's no time for running away now”

And now, because I lead a fascinating personal life…

I had a crazy allergic reaction to penicillin I was taking following my root canal. Turns out, I’m allergic and it just took 5 days for my body to realize it. I originally thought I was having an allergic reaction to Dufferin mall where I had ventured for the first time on Saturday. If you’ve been to the mall, you’ll know why I thought I was breaking out in Dufferin-related hives.
Allergic reaction or not, I still went out drinking to Grace O’Malleys before I went to the pharmacy. The pharmacist handed me antihistamines and suggested, “Whatever you do, don’t go to sleep…you could choke on your tongue and go into anaphylactic shock.” Mildly paranoid, I decided it was in everyone’s best interest if I sat on the couch and watched movies starring Jake Weber in the living room where if it looked like I was falling asleep, someone could poke me with a stick to keep me awake.
Either way, I’m still mildly spotty and itchy, but at least I’m only looking at a 4 day “work” week now.

Highlights from the weekend include scoring Police tickets which goes against my policy to cut back on concerts, but if I bought my mom Killers tickets for Mother’s day, Dad needs Police tickets for Father’s day.
Screw Las Vegas- I’m going to London for my birthday. London, England. And I already have tickets to see “Equus” on stage starring Mr. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. Whatever. He’s almost 18.

“You might never know, That I want you to know, What is written inside of your head”

And you should all be worried because-no word of a lie- my horoscope for the month said “Your Oscar predictions are alarmingly accurate.” Be afraid. Be very afraid. And I bet you wish you were all Aries now.

“I never did find my way back”

I'll post the poll results this afternoon! We have a 3 way tie for last place...someone vote again.
And I'll tell you about my awesomely awesome allergic reaction to penicillin I had over the weekend.

In the meantime, read this Zip.ca press release which features an interview with ME:

Two Thumbs Up for Zip.tv's Film Critic Search
Feb 19, 2007

Cash awards offered for top-rated film reviews, as determined by film lovers at large
Zip.ca (http://www.zip.ca/), the website offering Canada’s largest selection of DVD titles available for rent or purchase, today launched the Zip.tv Great Online Film Critic Search.

Zip.tv is open to any and all film lovers, to both paying rental members of Zip.ca’s online DVD rental service and to free members of the broader Zip.tv community. Anyone is welcome to rate their favourite movies and TV shows, and to publish reviews for the enjoyment of others. Zip.tv’s library of over 53,000 titles is the most extensive in Canada and one of the largest anywhere. Since 2004, some 3.3 million movie ratings have been recorded by Zip.tv members, and over 42,000 amateur reviews have been published by thousands of individual members. Once published, reviews are then rated by the community at large.

Starting this week, the top-rated reviews – as determined by the community at large – are eligible to win cash awards, including $100 for each week’s top rated review and $500 for each month’s top-rated review. Top-rated reviewers will also be recognized on the website with a special icon.

“Filmgal” (aka Rachel West of Toronto) has emerged as one of Zip.tv’s top reviewers with over 175 reviews published to date. "I love movies, and I love the opportunity to voice my opinion about them with my reviews on Zip.tv,” says Ms West. “I’ve always been the person who my friends and family turn to when they’re looking for film recommendations, and Zip.tv gives me that forum in a more public way. It’s also a great way to identify other movie lovers who share similar—or very different—cinematic tastes and opens up a dialogue. I’m always curious about watching movies that have opposing reviews.”

“In today’s 500 channel, long tail universe, finding movies and TV shows that appeal to your personal taste is what people are looking for,” says Rick Anderson, President & CEO of Zip.tv. “That’s why the impact of “buzz” – word-of-mouth referrals and reviews by peers - is growing by leaps and bounds, and having a growing impact on the success of movies and TV shows. Our growing and vibrant community of movie lovers today totals more than 300,000 members and over 5 million monthly page views, offering members the ability to contribute their ideas and share their opinions to our site through ratings and reviews. We want to give these movie lovers the opportunity to recognize from among their own the next generation of great online film critics.”

OKAY: Now everyone join zip.ca and vote for me. You don't actually have to pay and rent movies from them (and if you're in Canada I can't understand why you're not renting from them already). Just sign up and vote for me!

"I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money, And any old music will do "
-Private Dancer,
Tina Turner

The poll wasn't working and i had to re-do it so if you voted before 3pm, vote again. or vote again just for the hell of it. I don't care how often you vote as long as you pick 6, but you can only vote once per day.

Fight for Your Right... Pick your top 6:
Ice Age- Hawksley Workman
Snow Song- Habitat
LDN- Lily Allen
All My Friends- LCD Soundsystem
Ruby- Kaiser Chiefs
Africa- Toto
Roscoe- Midlake
Hospital Beds- Cold War Kids
The Well and the Lighthouse- Arcade Fire
No Tomorrow- Orson
pollcode.com free polls

The rationale behind the 4 choices this week is:

I know there is a large Hawksley fanbase reading this right now.

We must nuture and encourage the less musically obsessive to not fear pitching songs.

The LCD song was the first one pitched this week.

"LDN" was the better of the almsot 3 Lily Allen songs pitched this week. And I might go to London instead of vegas for my birthday, so at least I have my my ulterior motives known.

Sorry for keeping your boyfriend off the list McNeil the Younger. You can pitch him next week. YOU CAN PITCH ANYTHING- new, old, homemade, remixed, whatever. As long as it can be found online for the listening.

And in case anyone cares, Anti-Valentine's Day at The Red Room ended in me falling in a snow bank on the corner of College and Spadina while NOT drunk. Today, I gorge on half-priced cinnamon hearts.

"So hold me close honey say you're forever mine, And tell me you'll be my lonely Valentine"
-Valentine's Day, Bruuuuuuuce

Happy VD Day...love me & Ernest Borgnine.

Gallery of the Absurd has outdone themselves with this Borg-love card.

The increasingly awesome playlist poll will be up tomorrow, if I can wade through all these awesome pitches...Mega props in this pitching bloodbath. A bloodbath of musical hilarity.

Also, Dirk and Nat need some props for their hilarious hangover phone message they left me on Saturday in which Dirk yells, "Hey buddy...it's me Rachel... I mean, it's Dirk." We're all missing drunken nights in Ottawa (except for you, Kate):

“Let me not get down, from walking with no-one, and if I stumble from exhaustion”
-Van Occupanther, Midlake

Your playlist of the week, in order of voteworthy awesomeness:

Ruby- Kaiser Chiefs
Africa- Toto
Roscoe- Midlake
Hospital Beds- Cold War Kids
The Well and the Lighthouse- Arcade Fire
No Tomorrow- Orson

Cowbell- Tapes N’ Tapes
Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes- Paul Simon
Ooh La- The Kooks
All us Sinners- Eastborough (featuring the Old Man)

The last 4 are sadly dropped from the list.
You know the drill for new songs.

“They told me I wouldn't, but I found an answer”

Last night’s Midlake’s show at Lee’s Palace was good. It took them a while to warm up- as in, there was no acknowledgment that the crowd was even there until halfway through the set. The crowd was really good- lots of cheers from the packed floor. The Chirs Martin-esque frontman sounded fantastic, much more depth than on the album. They played for a surprising 80 minutes. The only odd point was this video projection they had going on at the back of the stage which featured random made-for-tv movie clips which was incredibly distracting. And they played in almost total darkness which I am guess was so the projection screen could be seen. All in all, well worth the $12 and would jump to see them again. Clear highlights were “Roscoe,” “Yougn Bride” and “Van Occupanther” as well as a new song whose title is something like “Children of the Corn.” I took a picture but am inherently lazy and will eventually upload it to sate your curiosity.

And for those of you who understand this sentence: the singer looks like "The Bad Chris" from Carleton film. Y'know, the Guy Maddin obsessed one with the borderline snuff film collection who once invited me to his house for tea....and I know this sentence in itself is an oxymoron since both Chris' are technically bad.

“Let me not be too consumed with this world”

And in case you were wondering, Mondays at the Dance Cave are about 5 people dressed in head to toe black dancing to Tiffany’s “I think We’re Alone Now.” Shudder. It looks like a Patrick Watson show is on tap for Friday night, so I’ll give into my concert addiction in favour of the Cave.

“Sometimes I want to go home and stay out of sight for a long time”

“Out here in the fields, I fought for my meals, I get my back into my living”
-Teenage Wasteland, The Who

If you want to get hit on, move to Thorold.

Specifically, the local IGA in the milk department. I got one too many “How you doin’?” from stock boys. I glared back and tried to keep from laughing. I guess it’s an un-needed confidence booster.

Also of note, Value Village which seems to be the new local singles hang out. I actually slapped a dude’s hand away from me as he went to see what album I had picked up from the bin. Never one for small talk with strangers (or anything with strangers) I don’t want them touching my not-even-purchased yet things.

“I don't need to fight, To prove I'm right, I don't need to be forgiven”

My trip home was based around a trip to the dentisits if you’ll recall my tooth chipping incident on Valentine’s conversation hearts; long story short, I got a partial root canal (didn’t feel any pain proving that the only place I have a high pain tolerance is in my mouth….and I know that sounds bad). But I scored some sweet Tylenol 3s and a batch of penicillin. Yesssss! Not so good, I find out today that my dental coverage doesn’t kick in until March 1st. This is where I need those Tylenol 3s. Good thing the next part of my root canal is scheduled March 5th…which totally screws me over for the In Conversation with Ken Loach thing at Cinemathque, but at least I’ve seen the film in question, The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Twice. And maybe 2 people understood that entire sentence.

“So let's get together, Before we get much older”

Other interesting points from the weekend:
- finally saw The Departed, which leaves only Iwo Jima as the Best Picture nominated film I haven’t seen.
- Shunned the Grammy’s since U2 weren’t technically nominated (even though the “One” duet with Mary J. Blige was blasted on her win). I only tuned in to see The Police. Then I caught sight of Beyonce and the Grammys were dead to me, leaving me to watch Iron Chef America instead.
- 1998 caught up to me and I watched Summer of Sam. Does John Leguizamo every play anyone likeable? I hate him in Moulin Rouge and we all know I only own Empire for the Sarsgaard.
- After bringing Mr. Merv Griffin home for the weekend, I was lucky to get him back from my dad who declared him his new favourite child.
- The Goodbye Bryna/Oscar party plans are in full swing with the addition of a punch bowl and my mini Oscar statue.
- Yup, I still hate Eddie Murphy. Now, more than ever.

Midlake tonight at Lee’s Palace…which only means that there will be time to run upstairs to scope out Mondays at the Dance Cave. I scoffed at their “no cover Mondays” sign, as if I ever pay to get in...

"I'm infatuated, It's all too much, the pressure"
-Crush with Eyeliner, REM

Okay I fooled you and posted this week's poll early. I'm not at work tomorrow and therefore don't want to update this blog tomorrow. That's like doing homework when I don't have to.

Voila.

Voters are Winners: Pick your top 6

Lauren, I left your choice off because your pitch was lacking. C'mon girl, I know you are a CBC Radio junkie and can come up with better reasonings, especially for a song that you'd have to convince me to listen to. I'm disappointed in the rest of you for not pitching a song. That's right. I'm talking to you M.Lo and Eve.

And since when is Anna Nicole Smith's death breaking news on legitimate news outlets? I'm talking CNN headline news status and fancy bold type on Yahoo's news section. Okay, neither are classy, legit news sources...but it's not like this is the Weekly World News...then again, The National Enquirer is "the paper" at my parents' house, because if it wasn't in the Enquirer or on "Entertainment Tonight," it didn't happen.

"If you leave, don't leave now, Please don't take my heart away"
-If You Leave, OMD

Results are in. This is your playlist for the week, in order with songs receiving the most votes:

Roscoe- Midlake
The Well and the Lighthouse- Arcade Fire
Ruby- Kaiser Chiefs
Ooh La- The Kooks
Africa- Toto
Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes- Paul Simon
Instrumental- Eastborough
Maggie Mae- Rod “The God” Stewart
Black Flowers- Yo La Tengo
Luscious Life- Patrick Watson

Midlake & Arcade Fire were tied with 7 votes a piece. We must bid adieu to the Old Man’s “Instrumental” entry along with Rod, Yo la Tengo, and Patrick Watson next week.
Start pitching your song and make it good- ONE song per person and the balls to back it up. Your reasoning can be anything from “The bassist is pretty” to “It has all the melodic components of an orchestral manoeuvre in the dark.” (Go OMD!) Being dictator of this blog, I pick the best 4 reasonings, my own pitches included. You’re all welcome to throw in what pitches to be included before the vote list appears at the end of the week (I’m saying Friday-ish this week since I’m slagging off work).

"But if you leave, don't look back, I'll be running the other way "

In a non-musically related segment: Bryna's rent chequed bounced. And she's in Florida fo ra week. Guess she couldn't steal enough money to pay rent. We're holding her CDs random (no, nothing good or worth thieving). Now she has Cassandra, Carri, me, and the landlord after her. As if she couldn't leave any faster...

“Do you think, everything, everyone, is going mental,
It seems to me that it's spiralling outta control and it's inevitable”
-Everything’s Just Wonderful, Lily Allen

For the love of Nick Nolte, why is it so bloody cold in this city?

I realize that statement is really all based on perspective since I spent 4 years in Ottawa putting up with colder temperatures and I routinely have it pointed out to me that it is at least twice as cold in Winnipeg at any given moment from ex-Pegger roomie Cassandra. I told her I was frozen at The new Pornographers outdoor show on Saturday and she responded with a, “What’s wrong with you? Its like a spring day outside” as I defrosted in front of the fireplace (aflame with scraps of wood from discarded dressers picked up off the street…and a copy of “Dianetics” also picked up off the street and burned more on principle than anything else.)

“Don't you want something else,
Something new, than what we've got here?”

The free shows for the WinterCity fest at Nathan Philips Square was delightful, albeit freezing. I just think back to August when I was stuck on a furry couch in Japan’s humid and sweltering heat. Mobile was damn good. I’m surprised I even typed that. Damn good indeed. Why, I would even consider paying $10 to see them. They completely sold me by the end with a cover of The Police’s “Message in a Bottle.” I actually danced to it- partially because it was so good and partially because I had lost all feeling in my toes.

I’ve never been a fan of the New Pornographers and I can’t say I’m a fan now. I’m sure they put on a good show for their fans like Lauren and Eve, but I was counting down the minutes until it was over and humming Arctic Monkey's songs to myself while thinking about saunas, hot tubs, and donuts. I give them a “meh.” They didn’t make me want to pick up one of their albums or even listen to the 4 songs of theirs I have on my iPod. They’re no Mobile.

I have 2 extra tickets to Kaiser Chiefs in April if anyone is interested. Otherwise I will ditch them on eBay or Craigslist.

Playlist voting ends tomorrow when I get around to finalizing the list. I’m also bailing out on work on Friday so I don’t know exactly when the new voting list will commence- either Thursday night or Friday night. I’m unpredictable.

In parting, never watch Final Cut with Jude Law.

"Let it never be said, the romance is dead, 'Cause there's so little else occupying my head"
-Ruby, Kaiser Chiefs (my song o' the week)

You all know that right now, TBS must be playing Groundhog Day back to back to back to back...

"There is nothing I need, except the function to breathe, But I'm not really fussed, doesn't matter to me"

Since I really have no plan when it comes to this playlist thing, or any final goal to achieve with it, here's a list with all of your new suggestions plus the top 6 from last week. Again, I'll encourage listening to these songs before voting. We might need to cap it at 1 suggestion per person per week if y'all can't handle too many choices. Pick 6 and vote for them. And now, the smattering of randomness...

(and yes, i will find a better polling system, but I was too busy this week with legitimate work...and buying concert tickets).

Free Mobile show tonight....they only way I'll go since it's for free. And my Vegas birthdya trip may actually turn out to be an Amsterdam or London getaway. My mom rocks. And she most certainly did go to college.
