Two Thumbs Up for Zip.tv's Film Critic Search
Feb 19, 2007

Cash awards offered for top-rated film reviews, as determined by film lovers at large
Zip.ca (http://www.zip.ca/), the website offering Canada’s largest selection of DVD titles available for rent or purchase, today launched the Zip.tv Great Online Film Critic Search.

Zip.tv is open to any and all film lovers, to both paying rental members of Zip.ca’s online DVD rental service and to free members of the broader Zip.tv community. Anyone is welcome to rate their favourite movies and TV shows, and to publish reviews for the enjoyment of others. Zip.tv’s library of over 53,000 titles is the most extensive in Canada and one of the largest anywhere. Since 2004, some 3.3 million movie ratings have been recorded by Zip.tv members, and over 42,000 amateur reviews have been published by thousands of individual members. Once published, reviews are then rated by the community at large.

Starting this week, the top-rated reviews – as determined by the community at large – are eligible to win cash awards, including $100 for each week’s top rated review and $500 for each month’s top-rated review. Top-rated reviewers will also be recognized on the website with a special icon.

“Filmgal” (aka Rachel West of Toronto) has emerged as one of Zip.tv’s top reviewers with over 175 reviews published to date. "I love movies, and I love the opportunity to voice my opinion about them with my reviews on Zip.tv,” says Ms West. “I’ve always been the person who my friends and family turn to when they’re looking for film recommendations, and Zip.tv gives me that forum in a more public way. It’s also a great way to identify other movie lovers who share similar—or very different—cinematic tastes and opens up a dialogue. I’m always curious about watching movies that have opposing reviews.”

“In today’s 500 channel, long tail universe, finding movies and TV shows that appeal to your personal taste is what people are looking for,” says Rick Anderson, President & CEO of Zip.tv. “That’s why the impact of “buzz” – word-of-mouth referrals and reviews by peers - is growing by leaps and bounds, and having a growing impact on the success of movies and TV shows. Our growing and vibrant community of movie lovers today totals more than 300,000 members and over 5 million monthly page views, offering members the ability to contribute their ideas and share their opinions to our site through ratings and reviews. We want to give these movie lovers the opportunity to recognize from among their own the next generation of great online film critics.”

OKAY: Now everyone join zip.ca and vote for me. You don't actually have to pay and rent movies from them (and if you're in Canada I can't understand why you're not renting from them already). Just sign up and vote for me!
